Education & Training
To date, some 50 people are completing a Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma on the Snowy 2.0 project in electrical, mechanical, plumbing, surveying, and process & manufacturing. Future Gen will appoint additional apprentices this year as more beds become available.
Ongoing training and education of our staff is an important and necessary function of the project to ensure our teams are capable in delivering the Snowy 2.0 project. The various programs developed by the Future Generation training team help us meet safety requirements, upskilling and delivering project outcomes.
Training programs are run regularly and are provided by local suppliers like TAFE NSW, Global Skills Development and other professional agencies to ensure high standards of safety are maintained.
Some examples of ongoing training include:
Driving & Road Safety
Safety inductions
Confined space
Risk management
White card
Drug & Alcohol Awareness
Specialist TBM modules
First Aid
Working at heights
Asbestos
Further to our ongoing training of our staff and crews, Future Gen is committed to providing opportunities to school leavers, locals and indigenous youth through our varied education and training programs. These programs provide locals with an opportunity for employment on the project while also upskilling capabilities that can be used in other areas or industries. The programs also provide a valuable pipeline of staff which benefits the overall project.
School Based Apprenticeship Traineeships (SBAT)
Monaro High School
Future Generation has partnered with Monaro High School to establish a pilot program for students to complete formally recognised school-based traineeships. The initial program targets Year 10 students and provides the opportunity to study a Certificate II in Construction Pathways (CPC20211). This program commenced at the beginning of the 2020 school year. To date, Future Generation and Monaro High School have run information sessions for students and their parents about the program, attracting 28 applications for an initial 10 positions. Due to the
level of interest, the pilot program was expanded 17 positions. The program is fully funded by Training Services NSW. The program saw the students continue their studies in Year 11 in 2021 and enroll in a Certificate III in Manufactured Mineral Products (Concrete Products). This is a two-year school-based traineeship that Future Generation will support through the Polo Flat Segment Factory. When the students complete Year 12 in 2022, they will graduate with a Certificate II in Construction Pathways, a Certificate III in Manufactured Mineral Products as well as the Higher School Certificate and resulting ATAR. This provides Future Generation and Snowy 2.0 with a skilled, ready to work cohort of graduates with a variety of options, including direct employment, further skills-based studies (apprenticeships) or tertiary-based university studies (cadetships).
In 2020, 16 x Year 10 students from Monaro High School completed a Cert II in Construction
7 students advanced to Cert III Process and Manufacturing in Year 11
The training includes working onsite at Polo Flat each week with crane operators, electrical crews (TAs), and mechanical crews
The students do 3 days at school, 1 day onsite, and 1 day at TAFE.
They will complete 100 days on the job throughout Years 11 and 12.
A 5-week training program was recently delivered by Global Skills Development separate to the TAFE component to give students the skills and knowledge in Work Health and Safety (WHS), working at heights, Confined Spaces and how the carousels work at Polo Flat.
In 2021 students also picked up additional work at Polo Flat when COVID affected their schooling, weekends and during their school holidays.
We have had great feedback from the site team and the students have become a valuable part of the crew.
In 2021 there was also a new intake of Year 10 students completing their Cert II.
