Traffic

As work continues on Snowy 2.0 there is ongoing increased construction traffic in the project area, specifically on the:

  • Monaro Highway

  • Snowy Mountains Highway

  • Link Road, Kiandra

  • Tantangara Road.

There will also be increased traffic, including heavy vehicle movements, in and around:

  • Cooma

  • Adaminaby

  • Rock Forest, near entrance to national park

  • Tumut

  • Polo Flat industrial area.

Arrangements to manage traffic are in place to minimise safety risks for road users during periods of high traffic flow. Road conditions are also monitored to ensure safety and reliability.

There may be some short-term restrictions applied to certain roads during construction of the project to facilitate the movement of large equipment.

Please note: Severe weather warnings and heavy snowfalls across the Snowy Mountains may impact road conditions. Be careful, be patient and drive to conditions.

Oversized vehicle movements

Transporting major components

Delivery of electro-mechanical components to build turbine units for the Snowy 2.0 underground power station at Lobs Hole, and large plant & equipment to all work sites will continue throughout 2024 and beyond.

An increase in movements of oversized loads is planned over the coming months and these may involve some minor delays for motorists. Some of these loads will involve disruption to traffic through Cooma and the Snowy Mountains Highway.

All oversize moves will be transported under pilot escort and at times, depending on size, police escort. Please always adhere to directions from pilots and NSW Police.

Large, escorted loads will be transported during the daytime and at night. To minimise disruptions to road users and the community, loads wider than 4-metres will travel on the Snowy Mountains highway at night.

The following overnight loads are scheduled:

  • From 12am to 5am Sun 24 Nov - Police & pilot escort to Four Mile via Cooma - rolling road closure

  • From 9pm on Sun 24 Nov to 5am on Mon 25 Nov - Police & pilot escort from Four Mile on Snowy Mountains Highway and Link Road to Lobs Hole - rolling road closure between Four Mile and Rock Forest, temporary full road closure through national park to Lobs Hole.

  • From 12am to 5am Sun 1 Dec - Police & pilot escort to Four Mile via Cooma - rolling road closure

  • From 9pm on Sun 1 Dec to 5am on Mon 2 Dec - Police & pilot escort from Four Mile on Snowy Mountains Highway and Link Road to Lobs Hole - rolling road closure between Four Mile and Rock Forest, temporary full road closure through national park to Lobs Hole

  • From 12am to 5am Sun 8 Dec - Police & pilot escort to Four Mile via Cooma - rolling road closure

  • From 9pm on Sun 8 Dec to 5am on Mon 9 Dec - Police & pilot escort from Four Mile on Snowy Mountains Highway and Link Road to Lobs Hole - rolling road closure between Four Mile and Rock Forest, temporary full road closure through national park to Lobs Hole

  • From 1am to 4am Sun 15 Dec: Police & pilot escort from Cooma on Snowy Mountains Hwy and Link Rd to Lobs Hole – rolling road closure

NOTE: Our delivery program is subject to change at short notice based on weather, permit requirements, and other factors.

Snowy 2.0 trucks and segment trailers

Future Generation’s fleet of trucks with custom-built trailers safely and efficiently transport concrete segments from the precast factory in Polo Flat to Lobs Hole. These segments supply the tunnel boring machines and line the tunnels being excavated by the three TBMs.

By transporting up to nine segments at a time, heavy vehicle movements through Cooma and Adaminaby are reduced by two-thirds, reducing disruption to the community. Depending on conditions, the trucks pull two or three trailers.

Segment trucks make multiple round-trips each day, loading at Polo Flat and travelling to Rock Forest, Tantangara and/or Lobs Hole. Some segments are unloaded and temporarily stored at Rock Forest, depending on weather conditions. Segment trucks also travel during the evening between Polo Flat and Rock Forest.

Truck and trailer sets are 26.5m long and 2.5m wide (the same as a B-double). They travel within a regular single traffic lane and do not require a pilot escort. The articulated trailers make them easier to manoeuvre through roundabouts and winding mountain roads.

The gross weight of the truck & trailer sets when fully loaded is 91 tonnes (63 tonnes of segments plus packing supports) - this weight is distributed over the axles so there is less impact on the road surface.

The segment trailers are equipped with a number of innovations and safety features that have been specially designed to suit the alpine conditions of the Snowy Mountains.

The speed limit for the trucks is 90km/hr so motorists should be patient and maintain an appropriate following distance. Truck drivers will use the turn-out lanes along the Snowy Mountains Highway to allow motorists to pass.

Snowy 2.0 trucks are not permitted to convoy. Our drivers are trained and regularly reminded to keep appropriate distance from other segment trucks on the road.

Project-related heavy vehicles

General project-related heavy vehicles drive to site every day from 6am to 6pm for delivery to Lobs Hole, Tantangara and Marica work fronts. Some trucks travel to Rock Forest via Adaminaby and this area is used for staging trucks when road conditions are not suitable.

Most trucks travel through Cooma and the Snowy Mountains Highway and some travel via Tumut and the Talbingo Range.

Our Transport team receive the latest advice from agencies and operators about road and weather conditions, including real-time checks about the road network. This information is vital in planning and adjusting our transport schedule to ensure every load is delivered safely.

The delivery schedule is reviewed each day and is subject to change at short notice, especially in relation to weather conditions and safe access to work sites. Please note, severe weather warnings and heavy snowfalls across the Snowy Mountains can impact the delivery schedule and adjustments are made to reschedule accordingly.

Further advice regarding construction traffic will be updated as the project schedule progresses.
